It's all just metadata. Doesn't affect audio in any way. Broadcasters have been dealing with this for a long time. Glad to see more than one DAW is now able to process this data accordingly--that is, its presence or absence.

I always use bwf/wav, but its when I try to import a .wav file that if

figure out what that was.

When you create a session, you have the option to create with BWF WAV or AIFF.
If you specify BWF WAV, you're all good. If you're recording to a different
device, you might not have that option. Don't sweat it―it's not a big deal. Use
BWF where possible and, if that's not an option, just use WAV.

Well, I seem to be unable to record a file that conforms to that
format, no parameter in the recording properties says anything about
s31, so I have no idea as to what the conversion would do to the
file. I read the article, but still no idea as to what would change.

It has nothing to do with sample rate or bit depth. The link I sent earlier
explains the reasons why file interchange may or may not be important in a
given situation. Today, virtually everybody uses broadcast WAV files for
future-proofing. AES 31 takes that concept a step further.

All I can say is that if I record a .wav file -- usually from my
iphone via my roderec mic with a sample rate of 48k and bit depth of
24, if I don't check that check box then the import audio window says
that the file can be added directly to my session which is also at a
sample rate of 48k and bit depth of 24. If I check the box, then the
import window wants to convert the file, I am not sure what it is
converting -- sample rate is still all the same, 48k and 24 bits.

Not just bwf/wav but the as31/broadcast -- that seemed to be the

Yes, BWF WAV is very much a standard and you should always use it as the files
are timestamped and can be imported to other sessions in any DAW at the
original location in the timeline.

This did n't have anything to do with copying, but converting -- its
the first option in the import tab of the protools preferences --
something about converting to as31/brodcast wav, which I had never
heard of before, but apparently the template changed that preference
-- is this some sort of standard?

Hi John,

A lot of users (especially newer users) import files into sessions without
specifically copying them to the current Audio Files folder. This, in and of
itself, isn't a problem but what often happens is that they simply copy the
folder to another computer and expect all the files to be there. There is
indeed a preference for copying files on import. That shouldn't have anything
to do with the template and I don't understand why you suddenly had to change
your preference. For what it's worth, you can re-save the template with the
same name to overwrite the original.

Hi. I got the new version of flotools and I thought I would take a
look at trying the flotools template. Well, suddenly I could not
import any .wav files without conversion -- I wonder what it meant to
say that the file needs conversion because it did not conform to
something -- I can't rmemember the exact wording, but I eventually
fixed it in the protools preferences under import. I was just
wondering if you could document exactly what is set in that template?

Thanks a lot.
