I've droned on about this at various meetings. For a long time,
members thought they were voting for officers (President, Secretary,
Treasurer). When I became Secretary, I thought it would be a good
idea to read the bylaws, and when I did it became exceedingly clear
that Members elect the Board of Directors (for two year terms,
staggered) and the Board of Directors selects officers (for one year
terms).

The pattern up to now is that the person elected to what was Michael's
Board seat also went on to be President, but that was a coincidence
rather than structural. However, the pattern of experience was strong
enough that several people didn't believe either me or their own eyes
when I pointed directly at the various clauses in the bylaws. The
bylaws are online, you can read for yourself! ;-)

(Note: the optional parts at the end are not considered part of the
bylaws in force, per board decision, see:
   http://wiki.personaltelco.net/BoardMeeting20061206).

I also want to thank Michael for his two years of service, both on the
Board and his able service representing us as President, not to
mention his extensive history as a volunteer prior to that. I hope
that we can continue to profit from his good judgement on the Advisory
Board and as a volunteer.

I'll just say a few words about my goals as President. I think the
most important thing for PTP is to remain active as a beacon, an
educational resource and a rallying point for communications freedom,
and for endeavoring to secure the means for people and their
electronic helpmates to transfer information at their own discretion,
and not at the whim or under the arbitrary policy constraints of those
self-interested groups that have seized control of the pathways. In
the process, we will continue to assist those who wish to share their
internet connections with their community, activities for which we are
best known, and we will continue to work to advance the goals of
communications freedom by whatever means present themselves.
