Looking at the specialized hardware inside a Skypilot at PLUG Afters
on Thursday, and the complexities associated with getting a Linux
distro on the single board computer in there, does it make any
sense at all to try to wedge an ALIX in a Skypilot instead? If
an interface PC board is needed, Galen might be able to help.

I don't think that is a practical approach to convert all the
skypilots, but might be a useful hack for one or two, especially
if a demo unit could help sell somebody on providing the funds for
a more practical software discovery and conversion project using
the existing Skypilot hardware.

Alternately, there appears to be more than one Skypilot hardware
type, yes? If there are a few oddball units that are not worth
the trouble to reverse engineer, the ALIX approach might be best
applied to those.

I still don't know what you can actually /do/ with the damned
things that is worth the effort. The idea of broadcasting wifi
in a tree-lined city is problematic. I've seen some good ideas
here, but few compelling enough to justify the expense of an
organization maintaining them. The Skypilots may be better for
large indoor spaces. The redevelopment plans for the Memorial
Coliseum might be worth exploring. If they kept the arena,
can you imagine how you would sector out wifi to 9000 people
with laptops? :-)

A demo unit for the Coliseum redevelopment planners might help
sell a larger project.
