There was a ptxdist-1.99.19.1 release that included a bugfix related to X.
I think there were some keyboard related problems without this.

I pushed a bugfix to the git master repository [1], that allows you to
install mcookie. The patch should apply to ptxdist-1.99.19.
Or you could start X with xinit.
