Hmmm, have you tried the latest ptxdist git? I can create a root.tgz and
fwupdate-*.pmx without any problems.
Can you send the output of "ptxdist -d images"?

Btw I'd use remove_quotes for $(IMAGEDIR)/fwupdate-$(PLATFORM_VERSION).pmx
