Currently we are just using reverse domain IDs, e.g.
com.yahoo.widget.stockticker. Do we think GUIDs are really necessary?
We've talked about moving to them here, but I'm not sure what it
ultimately gets us.

You could call it a guidget - a global unique identifier for a widget.
This name also implies a possible implementation - each widget can be
given a random 128 (or 256) bit identifier. It works for COM objects.
Will probably work here as well.
