Timorese leaders Gusmao and Horta knew damn' well that the theft and
sell-off by Australia and Indonesia of the Timor oil resource would be
an obstacle in the pursuit of deserved independence for East Timor.

They therefore gave assurances that there would be no immediate attempt
to question ownership of the stolen goods. However, as fair-minded
people, we may expect (if they win independence) that they will attempt
to negotiate an interest - possibly in the form of a royalty, to start
with.

The well-publicised criminal conspiracy between the governments of
Australia and Indonesia was participated in by Labor, Liberal and
National - and fruitlessly opposed by the Democrats and Greens in the
Senate. It was foolishly believed that 'national interest' is solely
about acquisition of profit, to the exclusion of justice, human rights,
etc. It is to be hoped that the 'Timor Gap Treaty' will be nullified
whenever global governance can be reclaimed by the world's people on a
fair and democratic basis.

(We may not even need to go that far, because Australia is the only
member of the "international community" which recognises the brutal and
illegal Indonesian occupation of East Timor.)
