Editorial! Having perused Reading 15 what is your opinion? Can't wait to get into Parliament to make a speech or two? With such wonderful, kind and generally agreeable MPs in our national Parliament, how could there be any unhappiness in Australia? Everyone is out to help everyone else. Do you REALLY believe that? The editors of this Political Candidate's Course don't. Can you see what our MPs are doing - probably subconsciously? Can you detect the trick, the technique? We will give you the answer: they are manipulating symbols. Politicians (like all good PR people) are tapping into emotions. (Remember the rich vein that the Lady Di phenomenon was??!! And who didn't brush away a tear when Elton John sang "Goodbye England's Rose".) Manipulating signs and symbols which have deeper meaning, is the essence of Symbolic Man's "praxis': Being a "Symbolic Man" is a lot easier than achieving something, building a nation, achieving reforms, and righting "wrongs". That is all hard work! Symbolic man would rather travel around (on a handsome travel allowance of course) attend global conferences on this symbolic issue or that symbolic thing and make "well received" speeches, greeted with warm and "sincere" applause and media accolades. That is a good day's work for Symbolic Man. Symbolic Man never challenges the established order. Symbolic Man - despite much feigned "angst"- never "rocks the boat". That is not the role of a (symbolic) Tribune! This possibly is at the root of our national problems today: we have Symbolic Man serving as impotent tribunes, delivering placebo speeches in a token forum in an emasculated Parlez-ment. YOU must change that! The above is from Tutorial 24 of the Political Candidate's Course by David Syme College http://www.davsym.com.au/ ---------------------------------------------------------------- This is the Neither public email list, open for the public and general discussion.
