[Radio interview on 25/11/99, 6PR Perth.] SATTLER: She's not very amused. I mean it was only a little while ago that you, your Treasurer and her were in the political bed together over the GST. What's happened now? HOWARD: Well we dealt in good faith with the Democrats. But as I'm sure they understood all along if it were possible in the end for us to get everything we wanted with Labor's support in preference to most of what we wanted with Democrat support, we were obviously going to go for everything we wanted with Labor support. I mean that's just a normal commonsense approach. It's not meant to be offensive to the Democrats. I appreciate very much the support the Democrats have given to the Government on a lot of measures including the major part of the tax package. But we live in a real world environment where if the Opposition is willing for whatever reasons to support a measure that the Government wants, well the Government would be very foolish not to take that Opposition support. SATTLER: Did it come like a bolt out of the blue for you because I think the Treasurer was sitting down the Democrats at about seven o'clock last night thinking he was going to be doing the deal with them? HOWARD: Howard, nothing in this occupation ever surprises me.
