My criticism of the Australian Democrats appears to be shared by the
writer of this letter in today's 'Canberra Times' (29/11/99).
No opposition party left
YOUR editorial ('Timor tax not the way to pay bills' , CT, November 25)
has one major flaw. The rich are undoubtedly made richer by John Howard's
policy of ' giving far greater rewards to high-income earners than to the
poor'', but Howard never sold ' the GST to the electorate''. It was sold
to the leader of the Democrats, a party which once was admired but whose
leader has lost her way. The party no longer ' keeps the bastards honest'
, but joins them as they flog the worker. Before joining the ALP, Cheryl
Kernot made a deal with Peter Reith to change the Industrial Relations
Commission. Then Meg Lees made a deal with John Howard to give us the GST.
Now Labor's Simon Crean is ready to make a deal to give Costello what he
wants ' a big cut in company tax'' (' Costello, Crean do a deal on tax'',
CT, November 25, p.1). In effect, there is no longer an opposition! The
battler is left with on-one to make a deal with and no way to punish
mainstream parties. A pox on all three of the houses! Looks like the next
election will be won by the Independents and the Greens. Bless this mess
believe it or not it's called ''democracy in action''. Seems like we
desperately need a third mainstream party.
