Last year, Parliament's Finance and Expenditure Committee
undertook an inquiry into the operation and powers of the IRD. They discovered
what many productive New Zealanders already knew and had experienced; the IRD is
out of control. It is a law unto itself operating with a regime of fear and
intimidation. Its actions are causing an incalculable amount of damage to our
commercial community. Businesses and enterprises are being routinely destroyed.
Good people are walking away from their dreams and aspirations. Tragically, many
people have been so distraught over their dealings with the IRD they have taken
their own lives.
The IRD have been granted enormous powers by the State.
Powers that not only enable them to wreck havoc and destroy lives but also
intimidate and discredit their critics. For years, and through successive
Governments, they have built a gargantuan power base. They have operated
virtually without restraint, freely abusing the few checks that have been
implemented on their authority.
That's all changed now. Today, throughout
the country, many New Zealanders are standing up to the bully boy tactics of
this jack booted department. A quiet revolution is underway. And it's not
before time.
This revolution has been in part driven by the energy and
courage of two very brave Kiwis. Rodney Hide M.P. and Christchurch author and
businessman Dave Henderson. For the last three years these two men have been
waging a very public war against the IRD and working to clean it up and have it
respect the fundamental principles of justice.
Between them, they have
written and published two highly successful books that expose, for the very
first time, the illegal, immoral and underhand practices of this brutal
government department.
But their campaign does not stop there. Rodney
Hide has been returned to parliament and is now involved in campaigning to
introduce significant tax reforms. Dave Henderson is working with other IRD
victims to help advance their cases and is working on the formation of a
national tax payers organisation.
Over the next few weeks both Rodney and
Dave will be conducting a speaking tour through the country. They will be
holding meetings in most major centres. It will be a rare opportunity to hear
these two very entertaining and informative speakers share their experiences,
