Laurie" Ryder , 75 NEXT MONTH , has served this community most of his life. Telegram Boy , Apprentice Mechanic , Welding , Turning & Fitting , projectionist at the Savoy Theater , Night operator of the Telephone Exchange and finally Service Manager Ford Agency. Today he has a shop at 36 John Street Coonabarabran servicing tourists and agricultural needs of the community. He also has a small section in his shop for Ammunition & Firearms. On the 22nd February he was 'raided' by seven men from 'Firearms Trafficking Branch'. His stock of Ammunition ( much of it yet unpaid for ), Rifles , Pistols most being held for local residents plus firearms supplied by local police for a variety of reasons including Anti Violence Orders was signed and then taken away. He was taken to the police station and locked up in their Glass Box for 4 1/2 hrs , fingerprinted like a common criminal, and finally charged with 4 counts of ' Trafficking in Firearms/Pistols/Ammunition/Etc. The Reason ? His $1000 LIFETIME License was 'obsolete'. The police claim that all regulations were changed in 1996. Its taken the police 5 yrs to act, in which time Laurie has registered 100's of firearms. At no time did the bureaucrats write or refuse these registrations, nor Acquiring or Disposal forms for firearms. The Police were at all times happy to interact with Laurie on his LIFETIME License. Surely he was also entitled to consider the license operational. Had the Department written him fulfilling their 'Duty of Care' and asked him to fill out an application (FREE, after dropping the $500 fee) for a newfangled license he would have logically done so. They did not write him , so we can assume at least , there was a Bureaucratic Omission on their part, for which Laurie is being prosecuted and persecuted. Late information from his Barrister is that 22 more charges are pending - with the possibility of even more!! A Barrister has commented "This is a case of Beauracracy gone mad." All that is necessary is to issue and back date the license and the 'problem' ceases to exist; it's a case of putting ink blots on paper , before the real world. Also Laurie heard on radio last week that firearms inspectors will be calling on all registered owners to decide if in the inspectors opinion holders have a good enough reason to keep their arms and if not to confiscate same. Germany also did this during Hitler�s reign!! What is required is for as many people to write or fax Soros and Anderson, indicating their grave concern and ask for immediate remedial action to halt what is rapidly taking the look of a political inspired 'witch hunt.' Please do it . Today if not sooner. P.S. they videoed all his shop as well as all his home. Laurie has been very adversely affected by this raid etc. as he is still suffering for shock induced trauma. At his age (and still working) a very dangerous physical happening.
