just a brief word about Midnight Oil's performance at the Olympics closing ceremony, which is causing such a storm on talk radio this morning.

We watched the closing ceremony at the local hall, where a big screen TV and sound system had been set up. At least eighty teenagers were in attendance. When Midnight Oil's set started, there was a tumultuous reception from that section of the hall. The cheers died, however, as Peter Garrett appeared on stage, his Khmer Rouge-style black tunic covered in 'sorry' prints. The hall went silent as Garrett jerked around, looking like a serial killer having an epileptic fit. When Midnight Oil's song finished, a few desultory handclaps were heard. Stark contrast, to the rapturous reception for INXS, Kylie Minogue, and the other wonderful entertainers.

Garrett did his cause an enormous disservice last night. His attempt to make a political statement, in the middle of a party, went over like a lead balloon. Even Midnight oil fans weren't supportive. Not for the first time, one pauses to wonder: just how out of touch are the green Left, with the views and values of ordinary Australians?
