There is some group calling themselves the Public Opinion Council. They ask
you to phone up on given numbers to register your vote (YES/NO) on public
issues. I received a recent email that gave some statistics on the issues
(Details at end of article); 10,000 plus people register their opinion in
this manner on each issue.
The email detailed the maximum call cost is 83 cents; this is the sting.
With every call the Public Opinion Council gets rich on your money.
When these polls are set up a rebate is generally provided by the phone
company to those creating the phone-in scheme.
Let us say that they get 10 cents a call. That means that the Public
Opinion Council is making $ 1000 plus on every issue that it can dream up
and email out to you. And how much does it cost them to do the email : a 25
cent telephone connection call to their ISP.
This is the magic of the medium. How would you like to make $ 1000 a day by
sending out a 25 c email message. This is one of the reasons people like
getting your email details and are willing, even to pay for it. The
solution is not to respond to messages like this.
