When the empire of SGML/DSSSL/HyTime splintered into fiefdoms of
XMLishness, the domain of synchronized multimedia fell to SMIL
(http://www.w3.org/AudioVideo/). Cannot that standard, along with
XLink/XPointer, do what you want?
I do not keep up with the field, but it seems to me the addressing and
linking metamodel of HyTime is unsurpassed by any standard--and is
certainly capable of "fine-grained interlinking" of multimedia
resources. Unfortunately it was burdened with an abstruse
implementation metamodel (architectural forms) and obsolescent syntax.

Bob,
I'm very thankful that you mention HyTime (and of course I'm aware of
this important technology :). However, my question was: "Can the linked
data principles be applied to multimedia assets?"
Did I understand correctly that your answer is "Use HyTime"? If yes, I'd
be more than happy to learn how to do this.
Cheers,
Michael

What do you propose that is not already covered by HyTime?
(ISO/IEC 10744:1992) Haven't we been here before?
