It's about Data Integration.
Heterogeneity of Data has been a fact of corporate life for eons.
Clearly this is "back to the future week" .
ODBC and JDBC don't solve the problem since:
1. they don't separate: data access protocol from representation
2. data source names (URIs) are scoped to highly at the Tables or View
levels
3. dbms engine record identifiers (surrogate or natural keys) are dbms
instance constrained (like location constrained URL style of URIs; they
are also value constrained).
The problem space is old, the data integration value prop. is old, the
delivery mechanism (HTTP URIs) is new and game changing.
Why traditional RDBMS vendors have twiddled their thumbs re. Linked Data
and open data virtualization will ultimately go down as one of the
mysteries of this century :-)
The globally epiphany re. the Web's inherent prowess is finally in full
progress, courtesy of the Linked Data meme!
