We have a postdoctoral opportunity for a Research Fellow to work on Disaster 2.0 (www.disaster20.eu), an EU-funded project led by researchers at Aston University and the University of Warwick.
The project concerns the application of Web 2.0, Social Media, and Semantic Web technologies to disaster management and emergency response scenarios in the EU. The Research Fellow position focuses on the technological aspects of the project including: assessing the current relevance and applicability of semantic technologies and linked data to disaster management; developing new ontologies and data sets, or integrating existing ontologies and data sets, for this purpose; and designing prototype applications illustrating the potential of semantic technologies in disaster management. Applicants should have completed or submitted a PhD in Computer Science together with a good first degree. They should be able to demonstrate strong programming experience (preferably in Java, Python, or PHP) and have knowledge and experience of Semantic Web and Linked Data technologies. The position will require interaction with a diversity of actors—including civil protection personnel, research scientists, volunteers, and system developers—from multiple EU countries. Experience or an interest in emergency management and related fields, a familiarity with empirical research methods, and an ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds are all highly desirable.
