PhD Position in data modelling and simulation (for the biomedical domain)

The healthcare and Life Sciences (HCLS) domains are developing into data driven
sciences. In particular data produced in the public domain, e.g. data from
population surveillance, requires large-scale processing, modelling and
semantic annotation to provide sufficient support in the decision processes
linked to the risk assessment for the population, e.g. in the case of epidemic
and pandemic outbursts. In addition, increasingly semantic Web technologies
are being applied in these knowledge rich domains to achieve interoperability
of data and the semantic normalisation of the data resources for subsequent
interpretation.

The PhD position will focus on data modelling in the biomedical domain and on
the simulation of biomedical and social diffusion processes. These processes
are linked to the tracking of disease outburst in social media in correlation
with or in contrast to other reporting data from public resources and
statistical information from official sites. It is the overall goal to
determine predictive parameters for future outbreaks. Systematic comparisons
between outbreaks of similar or different types from consecutive years will
provide insights into the parameters relevant to the outbreaks.

The Insight Centre for Data Analytics at the National University of Ireland,
Galway, invites applications for a PhD position in the area of data modelling,
simulation, statistical models, development of prediction models. The PhD
student will be hosted by the IT department of the National University of
Ireland in Galway (NUIG) and the Insight Institute at NUIG. The selected
candidate will be embedded in international collaborations and European
research projects. The candidate will be enabled to publish in high impact
international conferences and journals and to participate in world leading
research.

Eligibility

* Four Years Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Computer Science,
Statistics, Data Analytics, Operations Research, Information Technology, or
Bioinformatics

* Good knowledge of data modelling principles, for example machine
learning, statistics for data analysis

* Good background in Java, Python or R programming

* Strong interest in building mathematical models for simulation

* Alternative skills: semantic web technologies, data analytics, machine
learning

When applying, please use the same email addresses above and put " PhD Position
in data modelling and simulation" in the subject line of your email. Candidates
are requested to submit (1) a cover letter explaining your intentions, and (2)
a CV (in PDF format) giving details on your academic degrees, working
experiences and IT skills (maximum 2 pages). It is difficult but still
advantageous, if you can write a paragraph (e.g. in the cover letter, or
extra), what ambitions in the PhD position appeal most to you. Interviews will
be carried out towards middle and end of October via skype conference call, and
the position can be filled without much delay if required. We expect the
successful candidate to start at the earliest possible date, ideally towards
December 2015.
