8: Replace FOP

Number 8 PLEASE! I've looked on and off ever since we started using it
and I haven't found anything that can replace it, but it's the number
one source of configuration issues and weird behavior, so either
supporting another FO processor, or simply replacing it, would be a God
send. FYI on RHEL 6 Publican is locked to i386 and x86_64 arches because
of the FOP dependency:(
Wouldn't the best way to replace FOP be to try to use/co-opt/extend
one of the docbook2odf stylesheets, and then use OpenOffice's PDF
export?
One open source docbook2odf project:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/docbook2odf/
uconv (universal OpenOffice format--including PDF--batch converter):
http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/unoconv/
This would also enable the use of OOo Writer for drafts and review
edits, among other use cases.
Otherwise, I haven't found anything that could replace FOP atm.
