More information.
I have .asoundrc set to show my USB card as default.
I can also test with the following:
Xonar U3
SpeechMatic USB MultiAdapter (This is supposed to be the gold standard in
speech recognition, producing a clear and loud sound even from a very low
voice.)
I also have a Logitech H800 wireless headset, which is not considered a good
quality microphone for speech rec but seems to work as well as anything.
