In an Xterm:
% pulseaudio --start --daemonize=no
% pavucontrol

Aborted
Note: 64-bit Arch Linux, same machine (hardware), similar software and
sound configuration (/etc/asound.conf, /etc/pulse/*)
does NOT exhibit this problem.
