You're probably suffering from this bug:

This will be fixed in 9.0. In the mean time, you can switch from the digital
profile back to analog in pavucontrol's "Configuration" tab. I understand
that's very annoying, if this has to be done often, and maybe not any less
inconvenient than running "pulseaudio -k".
