Hmmm, dunno. On shutdown it could be that pulse is killed too early (e.g. before the sound can finish playing), but that's just a guess. Doesn't explain startup not working.... Bit stumped to be honest, sorry. For reassurance, it *does* work here so it's not a fundamental problem with the design....
