You could also modify module-bluetooth-discover to pass in a profile as an argument that it passes through to module-bluetooth-device.

As a patch this could potentially be merged upstream as it wouldn't interfere - that said there may be some reason that this is not done currently and thus it's not guaranteed to be merged.

3) pavucontrol 0.9.8 terminates with pulseaudio 0.9.17+. It's looking for a headset icon that doesn't exist. (you can fake it by stuffing a audio-bluetooth-headset.svg file in $HOME/.icons).

As you said, pavucontrol 0.9.9 is released and does not suffer from this bug. It also affects 0.9.16+ rather than just 0.9.17+.
