I think I have stopped the crackling noise (BUT introduced a new problem,
described later) by following some of the advise given on:

I added tsched=0 a couple of places:
.ifexists module-udev-detect.so
load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
.else
load-module module-detect tsched=0
.endif
But now pulseaudio seems very unstable. Sometimes when i switch between two
audio tracks (in Rhythmbox), pulseaudio seems to go into an eternal rewind loop
and crash.
