I'd start by debugging your HAL setup. Pulse relies fairly heavily on the
HAL system to get a view of the hardware on your machine. Make sure hald
is running and that you can connect to is as a regular user via the system
dbus.
The output of {{{pulseaudio -vvv}}} ''attached'' to this ticket may help
debug things.
