I've tried 2 different kernels (2.6.22 and 2.6.26) with 2 different
versions of PA (0.9.12 and 0.9.13) without a /etc/asound.conf file with
the ICE1724.conf file that comes with ALSA.
I've tried module-hal-detect
and module-alsa-sink with lots of different 'device=' options.

Looks like an ALSA issue to me. PA 0.9.13 should be able to open any audio
device via plug:hw:xxx as last resort. If that fails, then there's
something wrong with ALSA.
