i don't think this is a driver bug, i tried 3 different sound cards:
- intel on-board
- terretec aureon 5.1 usb
- creative x-fi
the bug shows up on all of them.

additionally i can add:
if i change the master volume in alsamixer just by 1% after corrupting the
audio it clears up immediately while keeping the levels i set in pa.
