Well... It's more complicated than that, at least if done right. External nodes probably should have an expanded interface - we've got, at least, requests for defaults and resources to be included, which may or may not make sense, but then there's the ability for these tools to get access to a given client's facts, which is more about APIs on the master than about the node interface specifically including the facts.
