This post seems to be about as good as any summary of the needs of various
distros:

lsb_release might be something worth checking out, too.

Feature #1919: Please have facter provide something other than arch to
distinguish /usr/lib vs /usr/lib64, etc.

Author: Bret McMillan
Status: Needs more information
Priority: Normal
Assigned to:
Category: library
Target version: 1.5.8
Keywords: facter lib lib64
Branch:

On x86_64 machines, it'd be very useful to simulate something like RPM's
%{_lib} macro, which will "do the right thing"... it's 'lib' on i386 machines
and 'lib64' on x86_64 machines, etc.

I could write my own based off of 'architecture' from facter, but this seems
like a potentially common enough that having facter just provide it from
upstream would be a good thing.
