With no changes to Facter itself and only updating the output encoding, it switches from printing gibberish to printing unicode correctly. Before we figured this out we tried a few other things like trying to store unicode as a wide string (which supports UTF16 characters): std::wstring red_comet = L"シャア　アズナブル"; std::wcout << L"Here's a regular string to wcout before\n"; std::wcout << L"RED COMET: " << red_comet << L" END OF LINE\n" << std::flush; std::cout << "Here's a regular string to cout\n"; std::wcout << L"Here's a regular string to wcout after\n"; Aside from being unnecessary (because the problem was with the console settings not Facter itself), this also didn't work because the file is encoded as UTF-8 and mingw fails to compile files encoded in UTF-16. So long story short, users need to make sure their console is properly configured to support unicode output and there's not much we can do on our end.
