My current impression is that this probably can't be done safely/generally because there's no way to know what whitespace is ignorable without (at a minimum) knowing the syntax of the underlying provider's command parser, and being able to parse/rewrite the commands in way that doesn't change the original meaning. For example, given POSIX sh syntax, these two are not whitespace insensitive: command => 'rm "x y"' command => 'rm "x y"' As one alternative I could imagine creating some kind of linter and/or related interface to help find and fix issues like this.
