Status update: I'm still working on this, interspersed with other tasks, and have reproduced the extended symptoms, which can be resolved in a manner analogous to the first problem, but that just lets it go a few lines further to where it hits a new (but closely related) issue. I'm looking at addressing the file streaming part higher up the call stack as it doesn't really make sense to "stream" in standalone mode.
