For example: exec { 'my_script': path => '/usr/bin', <-- IMO this should set the $PATH for myscript.sh to '/usr/bin' command => '/usr/local/bin/myscript.sh', } Basically what started all of this is that path didn't set the $PATH for the script, so I had to use environment, but that wasn't allowing unless to find grep. When I added both path and environment (with a PATH) to get all elements working Puppet was complaining that I was overriding path (which was required to get things working). However, as I write this I realize that the original reference code is currently working written as: exec { 'audit_in_grub2': path => [ '/usr/local/sbin', '/usr/bin', ], command => 'update-grub2-for-audit.sh', unless => "grep 'audit=1' /etc/sysconfig/grub", # lint:ignore:double_quoted_strings notify => Exec['grub2_mkconfig'], } (no environment) ...using puppet-agent-1.10.0-1 from PC1 repo. It seems that path is setting $PATH for scripts in command. Sooo... in regards to path / environment override, I would support allowing environment to set $PATH / path for command and unless and any scripts referenced therein, but to fail if both path and a PATH in environment are specified. I think that supports a spirit of explicitness and brevity.
