According to PUP-7641 I need to just have an empty zero-bytes hiera.yaml however with that, I still see with `puppet lookup --explain ...`: Warning: /etc/puppetlabs/code/hiera.yaml: File exists but does not contain a valid YAML hash. Falling back to Hiera version 3 default config Warning: /etc/puppetlabs/code/hiera.yaml: Use of 'hiera.yaml' version 3 is deprecated. It should be converted to version 5 (file: /etc/puppetlabs/code/hiera.yaml) So I tried just making it: --- This didn't help, so instead I tried:   --- version: 5  This gets rid of the warnings, however it then still does a lookup at the global level: Searching for "variablename" Merge strategy deep Options: { "sort_merged_arrays" => false, "merge_hash_arrays" => false } Global Data Provider (hiera configuration version 5) Using configuration "/etc/puppetlabs/code/hiera.yaml" Hierarchy entry "Common" Path "/etc/puppetlabs/code/data/common.yaml" Original path: "common.yaml" Path not found Environment Data Provider (hiera configuration version 5) ... It's still trying to look for a `/etc/puppetlabs/code/data/common.yaml` despite it not being configured anywhere. This file doesn't currently exist, however much like the OP in PUP-7641 if that file were to exist then I would potentially start to get weird side effects. Despite PUP-7641 being closed with an update to the documentation, I can't see where that is mentioned in the documentation (I could be being blind here), however the workaround stated in the ticket doesn't seem to be working either.
