Felix, you indeed have the picture. Given that, and the fact that the rest of this is pretty unclear, I am rejecting this specific ticket. I can see that there is a real problem somewhere around here: perhaps we need an explicit (and declarative) mechanism for "looping" of some sort, to allow people to write the equivalent of my pseudo-code loop above in the language.
