Issue #8231 has been updated by James Turnbull. Status changed from Unreviewed to Needs Decision Assignee set to Nigel Kersten
---------------------------------------- Feature #8231: supersede packages available in the distribution repository https://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/8231 Author: Christophe Drevet Status: Needs Decision Priority: Normal Assignee: Nigel Kersten Category: package Target version: Affected Puppet version: Keywords: Branch: I need to install a newer version of autofs. This package is available in the repositories and may be installed on the client computers. For CentOS 5: * distribution version : autofs-5.0.1-0.rc2.143.el5 * the version I need : autofs-5.0.1-0.rc2.143.bz579312.2.el5 Using yum provider, I can't install this version without creating a new repository. Using rpm, I can do something like that : file { "/root/packages/autofs-5.0.1-0.rc2.143.bz579312.2.el5.x86_64.rpm": source => "puppet://balsamea.intra.cea.fr/files/packages/autofs-5.0.1-0.rc2.143.bz579312.2.el5.x86_64.rpm"; } package { "autofs": ensure => '5.0.1-0.rc2.143.bz579312.2.el5', source => "/root/packages/autofs-5.0.1-0.rc2.143.bz579312.bz579312.2.el5.rpm", provider => 'rpm', require => [ File["/root/packages/autofs-5.0.1-0.rc2.143.bz579312.2.el5.x86_64.rpm"], ], } The package will be installed unless the required version is installed. It's nice. Now, on Ubuntu, I can't do it because dpkg is not versionable (#647) (BTW, I don't understand how dpkg can't be versionable while rpm is). I can't do it either with apt or aptitude providers because they ignore the source parameter. It would be nice if all providers can deal with the source parameter. This way, a package not available in the distribution repository could be installed.
