Issue #2553 has been updated by Ken Barber.

Tracker changed from Bug to Feature
Subject changed from SuperMicro serialnumber fact to Support dmidecode UUID
field to help with missing serialnumber cases
Description updated
Status changed from Needs More Information to Accepted
Assignee deleted (Paul Nasrat)
Target version changed from 1.6.x to 1.7.x

I would say at this point if the upstream vendor doesn't set the serial number
correctly, there is little we can do about it. At least for this case.

However - we could support the UUID field in dmidecode as an alternative fact
perhaps ... which I think is a reasonable feature request.

I'm point this at 1.7.x for now - since its a feature not a bug.

Feature #2553: Support dmidecode UUID field to help with missing serialnumber
cases
https://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/2553

Author: Jason Helfman
Status: Accepted
Priority: Normal
Assignee:
Category: library
Target version: 1.7.x
Keywords:
Branch:
Affected Facter version:

The serialnumber from SuperMicro processors all come back as the same number
across all machines.

facterversion => 1.5.6
rubyversion => 1.8.7
manufacturer => Supermicro
serialnumber => 1234567890
productname => X6DVL-EG2

I find the same serialnumber issue in dmidecode.

However - an alternative unique identified from dmidecode is UUID.
