This can be unreliable on "whitebox" machines, where the manufacturer/product name/serial number fields are left blank. For example, on a Dell system, the output of dmidecode includes: Handle 0x0100, DMI type 1, 27 bytes System Information Manufacturer: Dell Inc. Product Name: PowerEdge R515 Version: Not Specified Serial Number: 63XXXQ1 UUID: 4C4XXXXXX-0033-5110-8052-B6C04F4E5131 Wake-up Type: Power Switch SKU Number: Not Specified Family: Not Specified Handle 0x0200, DMI type 2, 9 bytes Base Board Information Manufacturer: Dell Inc. Product Name: 03X0MN Version: A01 Serial Number: ..CNXXXX313A0459.
