Bug #11965: Hiera can't find any data

I'm struggling how to describe this ticket other than "Hiera doesn't work".
I've been trying to get it set up to use the hiera-puppet gem, but Puppet
constantly reports that it can't find any of my values, no matter how I've
tried setting it up.

So in order to get to the root of the problem, I cut Puppet out, and moved to
straight-up Hiera on CLI, with YAML as a backend. And it STILL doesn't work!

This is Centos 6, Ruby-1.9.2p290, hiera gem 0.3.0.

Here's the simple example I've built.

Contents of: /etc/hiera.yaml:

---
:backends: - yaml
:hierarchy: - common
:yaml:
    :datadir: /tmp/hiera

Contents of: /tmp/hiera/common.yaml:

---
ntpservers: - ntp1.dc1.example.com

On command line:

root@xxis5:/etc/puppet/modules$ hiera -d ntpservers
nil

Notice I'm not getting my variable set, OR getting any debug output to work
with. I... really don't know where to go from here.

Am I missing something? Or does this gem simply not work anymore?
