Jason, I just wanted to follow up on this quickly: this fact has the same problem that the other proposals have, which is that they assume that there is *a* default gateway - which isn't actually the case. Plenty of systems have more than one, and a fact that only covers some of the cases causes a bunch of problems when they are part of the core distribution. If this works in your environment then there is no problem with using it through pluginsync or anything, or even distributing it as part of a module on the forge.
