As part of #7749, I've moved the typing for settings to something a good deal 
closer to "strongly typed" than it was previously.  We no longer use any 
regular expression stuff to try to "guess" what type a setting is based on its 
value.  The current behavior is basically: "If you don't explicitly specify a 
type, then it's a :string".

Personally, I'd be in favor of getting rid of even that fallback, and making 
:type mandatory.  Perhaps this could be discussed and we can get some 
consensus, and then this ticket can either be closed or acted upon... the 
implementation would be trivial.
