The fix, in 2.6.15, for this is here: https://gist.github.com/2727690#file_use_dir_cache.patch The second patch is the relevant one - it fixes the performance problem by using the existing autoloader `searchpath` implementation on the 2.6.x branch. It looks like some of this might port forward to at least 2.7.x, and master should also be checked. This is a substantial performance improvement for users who have slow file-systems.
