Patrick, since you're closest to the code could you please update the 
conf/auth.conf in the distribution to describe the allow_ip functionality? This 
might be documented elsewhere too, but ought to be in the example file.

Hi,

In git HEAD the comments in conf/auth.conf are still stating allow and deny 
directives are accepting IP addresses but this is not the case anymore in 3.x.

3.x introduce new allow_ip deny_ip directives
