Issue #5692 has been updated by Brice Figureau.

To my knowledge the state file and catalog cache is already atomically written
(I might be wrong, I didn't really check).

The last summary was also atomic at one time, but I think my patch was
reverted, so we might have lost this behavior.
----------------------------------------
Feature #5692: Internally-generated state files should be written in an atomic
way
https://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/5692#change-82634

Author: R.I. Pienaar
Status: Investigating
Priority: Immediate
Assignee: eric sorenson
Category:
Target version: 3.x
Affected Puppet version: 2.6.4
Keywords: mcollective backlog
Branch:

External tools like mcollective that read classes.txt require it to be written
using an atomic operation to prevent concurrency issues where the file when
read might have only half the classes in it.
