Issue #19782 has been updated by Josh Cooper.

Status changed from Unreviewed to Investigating

Hi Klavs, It'd be great to improve the user experience around this, but
unfortunately it can be complicated. An install may install multiple products.
Also the resource name can be a PackageCode (for example when installing a
product whose name doesn't change across versions, e.g. VMware Tools, and you
want to be sure a particular version is installed). The algorithm would need to
take these issues into account.

Perhaps puppet should compare the list of installed package “displaynames”
before and after each package install – so it can figure out what the
Displayname of the just installed package is – and then compare that against
the “name” given in the manifest – and complain to the user, if it’s wrong – as
to catch these problems ? (which I got caught by myself)
