Tim Mooney commented on an issue   Re: incorrect error message "You need rubygems to use Hiera" Although in an ideal world there would be a way to make the error message better, I finally figured out what the issue was and then the fix became easy. I'm not certain it's worth attempting a fix, so I'll just document what the problem was and recommend this be closed. Our previous puppet expert had imported early copies of the hiera.rb, hiera_include.rb, and one other hiera function into the lib directory for our local puppet module when he added hiera() support to our puppet 2.7.x infrastructure. It was these outdated files that were being found by puppet (because of their location in one of our modules) rather than its updated and internal hiera() implementations. Once I discovered what the problem was and nuked the three files from our puppet module, the problems went away and I was able to proceed with upgrading from 2.7.14 to 3.4.2.
