For virt-what not working, I think all you're missing is this: mount -t xenfs none /proc/xen With that, /proc/xen is populated and virt-what correctly reports I'm in a domU and therefore facter too. I just include a mount resource if virtual reports "xen" or "xenu" to enforce this.
