I've closed it as a dup, but am bring the description over here so that the full issue is recorded in one place: Currently, puppet allows matching with a =~ against non-string values. Examples of matches 'foo' =~ /foo/ ['foo'] =~ /foo/ ['bar', ['foo']] =~ /foo/ { 'foo' => 1, 'bar' => 2 } =~ /foo/ 0xfe =~ /f/ (0xfe + 1) =~ /5/ Although this all makes a sort of sick sense, the new evaluator supports in in a much more robust manner. These kinds of checks against structures are better handled by it and =~ needs to be reduced to just applying a regex to a string. We should issue a deprecation warning a =~ or !~ is performed with an LHS that is numeric in 3.x.
