Just an aside you could always use 'tmpwatch' (on redhat) or 'tmpreaper' (on debian) on the folder to retire reports after an age. As far as expiration I'm sure a combination of 'find' with -xargs with -mtime could be used to compress these files, ran as a cron job you get automation. Also, PuppetDB can run in small cases using HSQL, which is an embedded database. I'd only recommend it for <50-100 node setups at the most.
